Facebar - The (unofficial) Facebook toolbar

November 11, 2006 - This is the latest update for Facebar, the now unofficial Facebook toolbar. You can install it now!

The newest features on this release include:

  • Automatic Login
  • Check for New Messages
  • Checks your recently updated friends (and what they've changed)
  • Preferences to manage the settings of the toolbar
  • Cleaner look (and sporting the real Facebook icons)
  • Firefox 2.0 and higher support
  • Oh, and it still doesn't use the Facebook API!

To install the toolbar, click here (facebar1.5.xpi - 20k). After it's installed, you'll need to restart Firefox.

To change your settings for autologin, checking for updates, etc., click on the big Facebook button (left side of the toolbar), then Preferences.

After you click the OK button to accept the updates, then click the big Facebook button and the Facebook Autologin option (or restart Firefox).
NOTE: This only needs to be done the first time. If you have autologin set, then every other time you open Firefox, you'll be automatically logged in.

When you first try the autologin, the typical Firefox "save this password?" dialog box might popup. If you click the "Remember" or "Never for this site," then it'll never popup again.

It'll take a couple of seconds before the messages are counted and friends are updated when you first load up Firefox.

Here are some sweet screenshots of it in action:

Since Facebook released their own "official" Facebook Toolbar, this is the unofficial toolbar now. I'm a little sad that Facebook released theirs the same week I was releasing my updated one (with useful features). Oh well. I'm not sure how much I'm going to work on this in the future.

I have a few more features that I want to implement in the next version, such as Poke Counter (with the ability to poke back), Friend Request notifications, Group and Event Invitation notifications, and changing your status from the toolbar. It might be a while before those are implemented.

Enjoy!

August 19, 2006 - This is the Facebook toolbar for Firefox 1.5 (or higher, until 2.0 Beta) similar to the Google toolbar. This is the first release. It doesn't even use any of the new API features that Facebook just released. You have to login once when having the browser open to use any of the features. You can just perform whatever action you want and you'll be asked to login, and it'll continue doing your action... (did that make much sense?). You'll see what I mean. Actually using the API to access your information is the next step.

Install it now!
(facebar1.0.xpi - 17k)

If it doesn't try to auto-install:
- Open Firefox 1.5 (or higher)
- Go to File->Open File..., find facebar.xpi where you downloaded it to.
- A dialog box will popup. Trust me and click "Install."
- Restart Firefox to see it in action!
